The property is close to many local schools, including secondary and professional ones, and a guaranteed school bus service is available to Abrantes and Mação schools.
The EN3 road followed by a short dirt road with 400 metres provides access to the farm which has parking for several cars.
Matamouros is located in a region once occupied by the Romans and later by the Moors, and the lasting imprints of their presence are apparent in the many local archaeological sites, architectural heritage and farming practices of the region. Fertile soil and an abundance of water, as well as the close proximity to the Tagus River, make this a pleasant location for those seeking tranquillity in beautiful natural surroundings.
The farming plot with 7,840 m2 has an orchard with 350 fruit trees (peach, plum, apple, pear, almond, olive and fig trees), between two and five years old, and currently producing 40% of their yield potential. However, the land is also suitable for growing wine grapes. Additionally, the property has about 400 prickly pear plants, both local and Sicilian varieties, producing fruit with orange and purple pulp. About 3, 000 m2 of this plot has been used to grow vegetables and herbs.
The forest area has 90 oaks between 20 and 40 years old – holm and cork oaks as well as the native ‘Beirão oak’ – and many native wild herbs.
The property has two large wells, one of them in stone with abundant spring water all year round and with an ancient water wheel and tank.
There are also two buildings for restoration- a small stone house (in relatively good condition) and another in brick and without a roof, with a footprint of 16 m2 and with a 3 x 2 m terrace.
The terraced land is suitable for camping or the installation of wooden cabins and there is a pond which could be turned into a natural swimming-pool with 120 m2.
On a flat area of land three wooden cabins on stilts have been erected (a bedroom / office with 12 m2, a kitchen with 12 m2 and a bathroom with 6 m2). The current owner has also planned to build another cabin with 20 m2 to use as an extra room or a library.
A sceptic tank is currently being installed as well as an off-grid water and sewage system.
Off-grid electricity will be supplied by photovoltaic panels mounted on the field with the best sun exposure.
The installation of more non-permanent structures such as yurts, tippis or more wooden cabins is possible. In fact, the current owner has a project for funding approved by the Portuguese Ministry of Agriculture which includes more wooden cabins to hold events and workshops.
The forest plot with 8, 960 m2 has no organic certification at present but could be easily certified.
Besides farming, Quinta de Matamouros also has an enormous potential for eco-tourism linked to organic farming.

Please note that this property in located in an agricultural reserve (RA). As such, this property won’t get planning permission for building.
However, the current owner lives on site, in three timber houses. The local council informed the owner that he wouldn’t need a licence to live on site as long as each house had a footprint of less than 20 m2 and were erected on wooden stilts.
It may be possible to build timber houses with a bigger footprint but this may need permission from the local council.
Matamouros is the official residence of the current owner and he has the official documents from the local Parish council to prove it.
The owner has a project, which has been approved by the ministry of Agriculture in Portugal, for the development of a business related to organic farming. Some timber buildings are included in the project to be used as accomodation.
If you wish to implement your own commercial project, you may have to submit it to the local council for approval. As this is in RA and not in REN (Ecological Reserve), a commercial project may be approved if destined to implement activities related to ORGANIC FARMING.
